2025 marks our fourth year partnering with Ariel Fúnez, one of Honduras’ most inspiring and innovative young coffee producers. Ariel is a third-generation farmer who, after facing hardship and briefly leaving coffee behind, returned with a renewed vision to produce some of the best specialty microlots in the country.
We first fell in love with the fruit-forward intensity of Ariel’s natural processed coffee, but over the years our relationship has grown to include his washed and honey process lots, along with unique varieties like Anacafe, Parainema, and Gesha. His curiosity and drive push him to constantly experiment, from extended fermentations to planting new fields at higher elevations than many believed possible.
This year is especially exciting because for the first time Ariel’s brother and sister, Nestor and Lila, have produced coffee lots that we are proud to bring to Hyperion. Lila has also recently completed training in coffee cupping and quality control practices, adding a new dimension of expertise to the family’s work. Their efforts reflect the Fúnez family’s commitment to excellence that extends through every member of the family and to the employees who work alongside them.
Ariel’s vision has always gone beyond producing coffee. He has expanded his farmland to create steady employment, invested in higher-altitude plots to bring opportunity to remote mountain communities, and remains deeply committed to preserving the surrounding forests. By purchasing land in areas with limited access to jobs, he brings work closer to families who would otherwise need to travel miles for employment. His goal is to use coffee as a chain of opportunity where everyone involved, from pickers to processors to family members, has a chance to thrive.
Despite the challenges of climate change, rising costs, and labor shortages, Ariel continues to push forward with optimism and determination. He believes that direct partnerships with roasters create the foundation for a sustainable future, both for his family and for his community.
We are honored to share Ariel’s coffees, and now Lila and Nestor’s, with you. Together, they represent not only exceptional flavors but also the future of specialty coffee in Honduras.
