In July 2024, we were invited to join Forest Coffee in Colombia for the Condor Project, a transformative initiative involving 96 women producers from Pitalito. These producers participated in workshops aimed at advancing their skills in fermenting and drying specialty coffee, moving beyond traditional methods. The culmination was a competition where they submitted microlots, with 30 entries graded and 20 selected for final evaluation.
Top producers, including Ana Gloria Rodriguez, known for her extensive work in the coffee community of Bruselas, received significant cash bonuses. Ana Gloria is celebrated not only for her coffee prowess but also for her dedication to empowering women in coffee, offering fair wages, flexible schedules, and educational opportunities through a coffee school and daycare at her farm.. Together with 43 other women, she has formed the "Gloriellas" association to market the coffee from women producers more effectively.
At the competition, we also acquired outstanding coffees from producers Graciela Rodriguez, Carolina Solis, and Martha Rodriguez, each contributing unique lots that highlight their innovation and dedication. These projects are crucial amidst challenges such as climate change, labor shortages, rising costs, and the loss of generational knowledge in the coffee industry. The Condor Project stands out as an opportunity and platform for both traditional large-volume coffees and exceptional micro lots that showcase the best in coffee processing techniques and flavor profiles. We are excited to begin roasting and showcasing these exceptional coffees, continuing to support and celebrate the efforts of these producers.
